The Ola Cohn Memorial Sculpture Award is a non-acquisitive, $5000 sculpture prize in honour of one of Melbourne’s prominent sculptors from mid last century. Following studies in Bendigo, Ola’s career as a sculptor benefited from a scholarship in 1926 to the prestigious Royal College of Arts in London where she worked under the renowned British sculptor, Henry Moore. In 1931 Ola Cohn returned to Melbourne as an accomplished stone carver and eventually established a studio and residence in Gipps Street, East Melbourne. This venue soon became a popular meeting place for other artists, and through her legacy to the CAE continues this role today, as well as being a venue for short courses in art. The Ola Cohn Memorial Sculpture prize is a tribute to Ola’s passion for contemporary sculpture and bringing art to the people. The prize’s judging panel were presented a difficult task in selecting the finalists from a large number of quality entries. The work that forms this exhibition gives prominence to the obvious talent of a number of Melbourne’s emerging and established sculptors. |
